Volunteer Opportunities for Dems

The active part of the 2010 Democratic Campaign is about to begin. We need your help to get the message out.

The Worcester County Democratic Campaign Coordinating Committee has raised more money than we have ever had before to selectively support efforts to get our candidates names out before the public and to get as many Democrats to the polls. If the people who vote in Presidential elections but not in gubernatorial elections voted and if we register people people that have not voted then we can win in November.

We have a campaign headquarters on Racetrack Road(589) next to the Taylorville Methodist Church in the Taylorville Business Center. Suite 2.

 Here are some volunteer opportunities:

Blessing of the Combines August 7th : The local candidates will be there and need our support 10:30 am on Green Street by the Snow Hill Town Hall

Worcester County 4h/FFA Fair In Byrd Park in Snow Hill. August 13, 14, and 15th

From 10:30 am to 3:00 pm

Great Pocomoke Fair at the Fair Grounds in Pocomoke City August 26, 27 and 28th. From 11:00 am to 8:00 pm.

Weekly: Both Federal, State and Local Candidates are phone banking and canvassing voters. Phone banking often is done from our new Worcester County Democratic Campaign Headquarters.

There is also a Kratovil Campaign Headquarters on Market Street in Pocomoke City and a Mathias Headquarters near the former Olympic Coffee Shop in Berlin.

Daily Staffing of the Democratic Headquarters two hour shifts from 10 am to 12 pm and 12 pm to 2 pm.

Call the Headquarters 10 am – 2 pm Monday through Saturday and 12 – 3 on Sunday on 410  629 9107 to find out more information and to volunteer or call me on 410 208 1116.

Provident Organic Farms and CSA

Many thanks to Jay Martin for coming to our meeting on Thursday and speaking to us.  His presentation was interesting as evidenced by the large number of questions by the members.  As promised, here is a link the the Provident Farms website:

Provident Organic Farms

For those with interest in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) here are a couple of additional links where you can get more information.

Local Harvest maintains a directory of small farms, organic farms, farmers markets and local sources of sustainably grown foods.  Their website is here.

The United States Department of Agriculture provides a lot of information on CSA and organic farming at their Alternative Farming Systems Information Center here.

Finally, the Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Association provides a lot of information on CSA and many links.  You can reach their website here.

Website Changes

Some of you may have noticed that there have been a few changes to our website over the past few weeks.  Here's a summary of the changes:

  • The forum is gone.  It was not being used and was just taking up space.
  • Comments on articles are not allowed!  At the bottom of each article there's a button to allow you to make a comment.
  • We have a new calendar on the front page.  It's on the left hand side just below the 'Latest News' section. Right now the calendar shows all scheduled events for the three democratic clubs and the central committee.  If I can get some help I'll expand it to include more items.  Let me know if you have suggestions.
  • Just below the calendar, I've added a little widget to show the temperature and wind in Ocean Pines.
  • I've added a new category of links called 'Maryland Blogroll'.  It includes some of the progressive blogs in Maryland.  I urge you to check them out, especially 'Lost on the Shore'.  I know the guy who writes that.
  • Also check out the Worcester County Blogroll, especially 'Maryland on my Mind'.  Bernie writes a great blog about Ocean City.

There will be more to come.  Please let me know if you have any suggestions or comments on the web site.

-Tom

Stachurski paints on a different canvas

Former Pines president studies to be a pro artist

By Susan Canfora • February 9, 2010

SALISBURY -- In a neatly kept work area in the advanced painting studio at Salisbury University, Dan Stachurski is striving to find his artistic voice.

The Pines resident, who served on the Ocean Pines board of directors for six years, from 2001 to 2007, three as president during a time marked by turbulent moments, appears calmer, more introspective, amid brushes and canvases.

With the goal of being a professional artist, he is studying art at SU, working on a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, maintaining a 4.0 grade point average and looking forward to displaying his works in a show this summer, through the Worcester County Arts Council.

He has taken ceramic courses and has pieces on display at j.j. Fish Studio and Fine Craft Gallery in Berlin and at a gallery on Main Street in Salisbury. Next fall his works will be in the student show at Fulton Hall.
